 I watched this movie one night when I couldn't sleep and I loved it, it made me cry. I highly recommend it. The acting was great and the fact that it was based on a true story it really touched me. The difficulties and discrimination she faced, she is a strong fewo. I just watched this movie on Netflix and cialis sale is simply amazing and brilliant! I love movies like this one that highlight atrocities that our fellow humans commit against fellow humans. The acting was so superb I sometimes felt I was watching a documentary. I watched this film for the first time a few days ago and I immediately wanted more information about Sandra and her family. What has become of her brothers? How are her children? And is she infact her fathers daughter? This is an amazing story of bigotry and survival. I hope she has found a way to heal because she has had the misforfune of experiencing what some of us experience everyday---even in the good ole USA! My 2 daughters and i just watched this film (Netflix). My girls are both black and white. It was an emotional movie for them to watch. They were concerned why the mother did not stand up for her daughter more. I would die for my girls. We are blessed that my girls have the same rights as everyone else. Both of my girls as well as myself have friends and family of many colors. Thank you for telling your story and for being so brave. It is not easy to forgive and have your life been seen by so many. God is good. I cannot deny that this has been one of the best movies I've ever seen. I found it on netflix and I glad I didn't decide to watch doctor who or some silly movie instead. I am in absolute awe of this movie. It was beautifully filmed and the acting was great. It had me bawling and crying to the point where I actually had to stop and pause the movie, too. I felt like this is one of those movies you sill always go back to and learn something new each time. 5 stars(: what an awesome movie. so much sadness and for her to have come out of this simply amazing. Those parents loved her so and were victims of an era. A life's lesson. Albeit apartheid, is legally vanquished, it is not vanquished from the minds and hearts of those people who feel that segregation is right. It is still a sad state of affairs for so many around the world. I can only hope and pray that the world becomes color blind and the race we need to speak of is the human race. This film was simply, awesome. Wonderful film. I grew up in JHB in this period and so much was true and made me sad. The story was real (JAY in comments above, you need to do you homework about apartheid racism), well told and tremendously well acted. Good job around. Everyone should see this film- I have just seen this movie and I really enjoyed it. The racism being exhibited throughout the movie is sad at times, but it's spot on and the truth was exacting, which I appreciate. I used to live in South Africa and I definitely understand the racial divide, especially between the Afrikaans and the blacks. Very inspiring movie and it's definitely one for the good of the world today and for years to come. An excellent teaching of compassion and humanity. The acting was superb!!! I just saw this movie on TV and this is a fantastic movie. It is sad and very moving. All the actors and actresses did a great job. I really felt for this young lady as she had to go through so many changes. It was like she was not accepted by either race. She had no one to turn to, but she was a strong young woman. She over came all odds at the end. It really made me think how fortunate I am. Just caught this on HBO too. I was so moved by Sandra's story and came away with a great sorrow for what the black south Africans went through during apartheid. Sophie Okonedo turned in a brilliant performance. I watched this with my son and when he asked why the buildings were being torn down I told him that sometimes people to really mean and horrible things to other people and it is not right. He understood and I really think that he took it to heart. This movie is a decimated must see! Bravo! Just watched it on HBO. Mesmerizing to say the least. Heartbreaking no question. Apartheid was a crazy system and would be unbelievable if it hadn't really existed. So sad about her teen sweetheart. That kind of discrimination is enough to turn anyone to drink. How do you survive such harsh treatment? How does a bulldozer just come one day and sweep away your home when you have a family to provide for? Really disgusting! Dehumanizing and evil! Thank God for all the people who stood up and died for freedom. I just finished watching this movie and it was the best film of its kind that I have ever seen. Sandra's story is both captivating and inspiring. This was a deeply moving and honest account of life during appartied. Many fair light skinned blacks in the south suffered from colorstruck treatments but sadly it was from other blacks. I appluad Sophie for her excellent portrail of Sandra. I just saw this movie on Showtime this past week. Incredible story, but I am not surprised. Throwback DNA is typical in the U.S., but people just pass as whatever based on their appearance. Also, it was typical for siblings with the same parents to be racially classified differently from each other (ex: white sister, mulatto brother, black sister, colored mother, white father, etc.). My boyfriend and I saw this movie last night. This is such an incredibly moving story. Thanks for retelling it in such an exceptional way. I have honestly never cried this much during a movie. I plan to keep this one in my souvenir collection for my future children, who will be bi-racial, to see when they are old enough. Truely touched. Great movie, i think it is a great lesson for countries like south Africa and USA to realise that the clolor of one's skin determines how they are treated and to loosen the structures and take in every indididual. It is such a sad movie but very educative. It's amazing that she remembers the word of her dad,never ti give up.Inddeed,never give up Better late than never! Saw this film last night and i have nothing but praise for everyone involved. It really made me as a South African appreciate all that I have. A real must see, fantastic cast, great story, based on true events and a lots of lessons to be learnt! Wow...saw the movie last weekend in NZ. Rialto must try to market this movie much more in NZ. What an amazing film. What a great movie! This movie was very realistic in portraying the typical "good wife" being submissive to her husband - the head of the family. The moment in the movie that really touched me was when Sandra left Petrus. She would not be a victim like her mother. This movie really touched me! For those of you who don't speak Afrikaans, here is a translation of the last comment: Wel, vir wit,swart en bruin, Zoeloe, Sotho, Afrikaans, Engels maak nie saak wie of wat jy is of watter kleur jou vel is nie, die lewensverhaal van Sandra raak mens baie diep. Daar is sooooo groot lewensles vir ons almal. Aanvaar die een langs jou in liefde maak nie saak as hy dalk anders as jy is nie. Respekteer mekaar! En dan natuurlik ....... Never give up! This movie really speaks to the heart of every human being! No words could describe the emotions relived while watching this incredible moving story. Undoubtedly it still hurts but we need to move forward and forgive. My children were very moved by it and I realise that a greater work awaits us still as we have to educate our children and teach them to forgive even if it is sooo difficult. I saw the move today and I must say: I LOVED IT!! What a truly amazing story! i saw the movie two days ago and the little girl who played Sandra Laing still can't leave my mind. I am brought to tears just thinking about the movie. The actors did such an amazing job in portraying the feelings and emotions of their character. I have to rate this the number 1 movie I have seen in all my life. The people most hurt in apartheid are the colored people. The blacks were hurt yes, but since 1990 they have been the one's getting to tell their stories and they have been getting everything, while the colored people are still left behind. I speak from experience as I am a colored myself. We are still living in apartheid. this film moved me in an inexplicable way. different emotions flowing through me and for the first time in my life, i cried during a movie. This movie should be a reminder to look past 'Skin' and see a 'real' person. Imagine the tragedy and trauma introduced into her life, it is interesting that she overcame a situation and a circumstance such as this. A prejudice so fierce and lackluster that bears much soul searching and examination. And life doesn't stop for anyone it moves at a fast pace until the resolution occurs. This is interesting in that in this 21st Century, the issue continues to divide us instead of allowing us to celebrate our differences. I saw Skin in Washington DC on this past Sunday 11/22/2009, and it was a wonderful film. I went to South Africa for the first time in March 2009, and I came back with first hand experience of the racial tension there even today. (I am an African American man) I wish I could take everyone I know to see the film, as it explains so many feelings I can not convey to my friends and famliy that I experienced in South Africa. I finally made it to see Skin and was very moved. As a young adult (Jr. High & High School) I protested apartheid in front of the So. African consulate on La Cienega... But seeing some of the horrors on film brings a deeper emotional understanding to the issue. Intellectually, you may "know" the injustice - but when you are given the opportunity to "feel" the injustice, you become inspired to make sure this never happens again. What is the apartheid of today? In what country? What are the scars and the leftovers of it in South Africa today? Skin is an important movie, and I'm thankful to have seen it. I am so glad that I was able to see this film last night! The film was beautifully shot and superbly acted. It moved at a fitting pace and moved me beyond words. I saw SKIN at SRFTI Kolkata couple of hours back.An unforgettable movie.If I get a chance I'll watch it again.I wish Mr Fabian were present for the post movie Q&A session.Had lots of questions.Its remarkable how the human elements got etched on the foreground while the political affairs remained a substratum. I went into the movie expecting a sentimental tear-fest where the bad people were very very bad and the good where almost too so to be true. It was simple, human and to the point; asking questions that permeate every culture and society. As an aspiring filmmaker, I hope to be able to make something like this one day. Just let me say for the record...."I Truly Enjoyed the film "Skin"!! I had the pleasure of attending that screening, meeting Director Anthony, and listening to a very inspirational Q&A with Sandra Laing, and I am in no doubt why this film picked up plaudits here and elsewhere... I saw the last screening in Santa Barbara and was so impressed with the story and how it was treated. I heard that the crowd grew from 50 the first screening to 300 at the second and then a sold out crowd at 375 at the third screening. Such a moving and poignant story and quite timely at this point in our current environment. I am so glad to have watched this fabulous movie at Hong Kong Baptist University as a curious student. During my studies, I have been watching and reading materials concerning cultural segregation. What sets "Skin" apart from other movies presenting similar idea of apartheid is that the film is human oriented rather than mechanical issues like Population Registration Act, Mixd Marriages Act, Immorality Act and so forth. As a movie watcher, I am so impressed by the way how Anthony embedded these heavy issues into the movie while we would not feel like something was imposed on us. By subjectifing Sandra as a universal issue and humanizing the situation, the movie is thus more memorable and impressing. I had the pleasure of previewing this film and it's still in my mind 2 days afterwards. I look forward to seeing it in the cinema with friends in July! |
